There has been a worshipping Christian community in our building for over 100 years. In 1915, local draper, David Thomas relocated the headquarters of the International Holiness Mission (IHM) to our site at 68 Battersea Rise. They purchased the building from the local authority, who had previously used it as the Town Hall (District Office of Works) for Battersea.
The IHM were a missionary organisation involved in various social action projects, both locally and in South Africa. They also planted churches and met here for worship services, Sunday School and Christian conventions. After Thomas’ death in 1938, the church was renamed as ‘Thomas Memorial’. In 1953 the IHM joined the Church of the Nazarene, a small main-line denomination, similar to Methodism in its roots.
Thomas Memorial Church of the Nazarene formally closed in 2011, as preparations for the renovations began.
Today we are simply known as Fresh Ground London. We are still a part of the Nazarene church denomination and meet here regularly for Christian worship. However, we believe that church is not simply what happens for a couple of hours on a Sunday. We also operate the coffee house and coordinate the use of the community hall spaces. Our vision is that the whole building will be used to foster community, bringing people together from diverse backgrounds, with any surplus proceeds made going back into local and international social action projects..
Indeed, all are welcome to our times of worship and we would love to have people join us to explore the Christian faith. We love Jesus and we love people. Currently we meet for worship at 10:30am on Sundays.
